Codes and Conventions of Rom Comedy/Drama.
The codes of a Rom comedy/drama is the stereotypical boy meets girl plot. This is where during the climax the love turns into unrequited love and they have to find ways to be together, or they get together in the end through a long intense and heartbreaking struggle.
Usually Rom Comedy/Drama consists of casual costumes. This brings a real life effect to the film and could suggest that they are ordinary people like the audience watching.
The setting usually consists of big cities such as New York as that is the stereotypical city of where 'dreams come true' much like the dream and hope of finding love.
The music of Rom Comedies/Drama is subtle yet distinctive. For example, during the deep and depressing times of the climax the soundtrack or incidental music will be slow and often meaningful, such as Adele – someone like you. This is the stereotypical music used as the audience can relate to it and it is also modern and up to date which matches the target audience of this generation. In contrast to this, at the end of to typical Rom Com there is always a up to beat, modern day chart song which lifts the mood connoting a fairy tale happy ending. This then leaves the audience feeling refreshed and wanting to watch the film again or maybe even suggest it to a friend.
The Camera angles in a Rom Com often make the film more exiting. For example during the beginning of a Rom Com the camera angle of an establishing shot will set the scene of the main plot and deep shots or medium close ups will be used to highlight the main protagonists and give a brief idea of their lifestyle. A lot of close ups are used as they show the emotion which can engage the audiences emotions, therefore leaving the audience with an immediate reaction.
